The problem
Many US students lose their sense of control over mathematics very early in their school careers. Once a student starts memorizing solution processes instead of making sense of them, very few ever find their way back. Research shows that a frightening number of students are lost by the time they finish their study of fractions; however, the slide to failure probably begins even earlier, when students learn to 'carry' and 'borrow' without fully understanding place-value.
